Boden Store Fixtures began operations in Portland, Oregon in 1946. We began as a partnership of two brothers (Tom and Bill Boden) who started a company in a 2,000 sq. ft. shop to provide the local grocery community with store fixtures and construction services. As the surrounding community began to grow after the war, so too did Boden expanding both our client base and manufacturing area significantly in our first two years of business.
In the winter of 1948, severe flooding caused by a breach in the Columbia River dike wreaked havoc on the city. Along with many hundreds of other homes and businesses, Boden Store Fixtures was left devastated. Through perseverance and hard work, the company survived and continued to expand.
The growing economy of the 1950s and '60s gave us the opportunity to establish a reputation of quality, superior service and competitive pricing in the design and fabrication of a wide variety of fixtures for the retail industry. By the mid-1960's Boden's was a 32,000 square foot operation serving a multitude of retail clients with formats ranging from grocery to sporting goods. The larger manufacturing area allowed for Boden to begin laying the groundwork for the custom rollout work it specializes in today. In addition to the custom work that still made up the majority of orders, we began to produce multiples of like units for some of our larger customers.
By the early 80s Boden had expanded to over 100,000 sq. ft. and integrated some automated equipment into the shop along side the traditional wood working tools. Rollout work at this time nearly equaled custom work and we split Manufacturing into two divisions: Production and Architectural. Work increased steadily and by 1988 Boden had achieved annual sales levels of over $10 million.
The recession of the early 90s had a significant negative effect on operations as retail growth and construction grinded to a halt. Through cost-cutting and market diversification, we made it through a difficult time and emerged with a greater understanding of how to run a lean organization.
Today, with facilities totaling over 200,000 sq. ft., Boden Store Fixtures has grown to become one of the largest fixture companies in the Western United States. With the experiences of our past to guide us, and our manufacturing capabilities to power us, we are looking forward to continued success in the future.
